Euroa takes BDCA one-day title

Euroa easily accounted for Benalla in the Cleary Shield one-day final, while Euroa Juniors took the Trewin Shield honours.

The one day finals in Cleary and Trewin shields were played on Sunday, with Euroa victorious in the Cleary Shield, and Euroa Juniors taking the title in the Trewin Shield.

The Cleary Shield game was played at the Benalla Gardens Oval between Euroa and Benalla.

Benalla won the toss and batted first, getting off to a solid start thanks to James Dalton and Nick Mellington.

After 14 overs Benalla was in a strong position at 1/55, but the loss of Dalton for 24 triggered a middle-order collapse.

Benalla then lost Josh Challis (2), Sam Hazell (1) and Greg Hoysted (0) in the space of five overs to see them reeling at 5/65.

Surviving the 40 overs then became Benalla’s priority and the runs dried up.

Mellington was eventually dismissed for a hard-fought 30 with the score at 6/80, but Benalla could only get the score to 103 before they were all out in the 37th over.

Matthew Kirkwood was the star with the ball taking 5/17 off eight overs, his first ever five wicket haul in over 10 seasons of senior cricket.

Benalla’s chance of victory was to take early wickets and they duly delivered to have Euroa at a shaky 3/19.

Andy Squires and Rick Maplestone, so often Euroa’s saviours over the past two seasons, came together at the crease and combined for a 78-run partnership in just nine overs to put the game well and truly in Euroa’s favour.

Squires (61) and Maplestone (19) were dismissed in the 18th over to leave the score at 5/97, but experienced pair Ash Ellis and Matt Kirkwood safely scored the remaining runs to see Euroa home in the 21st over.

The Trewin Shield one-day final was played at the Lords Oval in Mansfield between Merton and Euroa Juniors.

In a similar scoreline to the Cleary Shield final, the team batting first (Merton) scored a moderate 93, with Euroa Juniors then hitting the required runs in just 17 overs, finishing at 3/94.

Merton lasted 37 overs in their innings with Brant Anselmi (29) top scoring, Mark Noye next best with 17.

For Euroa Juniors Dale Sutherland was the destroyer with the ball taking 5/11, Matt Walker (2/19) and Dav Mackrell (2/23) providing good support.

In reply Juniors had little negotiating the small total with Matt Walker top scoring on 41, Ash Weston next best with 23 not out.
