Benalla Racing Club meeting moved to Wangaratta

Benalla's February 20 race meet has been moved to another location in the wake of the abandoned January 29 meeting.

Racing Victoria has announced the meeting scheduled for Benalla on Monday, February 20 has been transferred to Wangaratta.

‘‘We undertook an inspection of the Benalla track following their meeting abandonment on January 29 in which the track was overwatered on race morning,’’ chief operating officer Bernard Saundry said.

‘‘It was determined that a small section of the track near the 300m mark, which was water logged on the day, would benefit from further renovation.

‘‘To achieve this effectively and eliminate any further concerns for competing jockeys and trainers, we are taking a conservative approach and transferring the February 20 meeting to Wangaratta.’’

Saundry advised Benalla would resume racing at its next scheduled meeting on Tuesday, March 20.

Benalla Racing Club manager Brendan Storer said the decision had been made in conjunction with the club.

‘‘We had a say in it ... we probably could have raced on it,’’ Mr Storer said.

‘‘But we’re taking a conservative approach.’’

Mr Storer said the part of the track in question is presently being fixed and should be good to go by the March meeting.
