Merrigum gave its KDFL percentage a massive boost on Saturday.
Merrigum’s goal blitz
Third-placed Merrigum gave its percentage a massive boost to snatch a double chance spot with a 333-point whitewash of Ardmona.
Josh Pell with 11 goals, Ramadan Yze and Mitch Younger with 10 each and Anthony Mann with five helped the visitors pile on 52.29 while holding the Cats to 1.2 in a complete mismatch.
Merrigum announced its intentions to go all-out in the first term when it banged through 14 goals and met coach Christian Barnett’s demand to stay focused for the four quarters .
The Bulldogs surpassed their opening quarter blitz in the third term with 17 goals and then finished with a 14-goal last term.
The Merrigum defence had a pretty lean day and Pell, Yze and Younger were able to cash in on the dominance of Brodie Vick, Josh Stammers and Daniel Dryden.
For the Cats — who learned first year coach Gavin Gledhill was stepping down before the game — Jayedon Hexter, Nathan Gibson and Luke Trevena tried hard with little support to try and reduce Merrigum’s complete dominance.
Merrigum’s massive win gave its percentage enough boost to oust Stanhope, who also ha decisive win over Avenel, from second spot.
With Merrigum expected to beat Rushworth in the final round this week, Stanhope will need to have a massive win over neighbour Girgarre to get back the double chance on percentage, if Murchison beats Violet Town.
But if Violet Town wins, Stanhope will regain a two top spot for the finals at Murchison’s expense.
Tigers show character
Rushworth, after a mauling by Lancaster the previous week, showed a fair bit of character to put up a cheeky challenge against reigning premier Violet Town in the game at the Ironbark Stadium.
The Tigers put it to the Towners for three quarters, going into the final stanza only 13 points down.
But the visitors rallied to kicked five last quarter goals to Rushworth’s one to secure a 43-point win at the finish.
Ex-Collingwood players Ben Johnson and Ben Kinnear played for the Towners, which made Rushworth’s performance even more significant.
But it was local products in Rob Osborne, Brent Bailey, Jack Smyth and Brendan Gleeson who showed the way for the Towners along with goalsneak Rob Rutley, who booted five goals.
The ever-reliable Matt Thomas, Lee Rowland, Cam Healy and Scott Hamilton, along with coach Jacob Lloyd and Paul Morgan, were the Rushworth players who showed the way for their side.
Stanhope sinks Swans
Stanhope shook Avenel off after quarter-time to go onto a big win at Stanhope.
An eight-goal second term and a six-goal third term split the game wide open after only a point separated the sides at quarter-time.
The big body of Matt Johnson proved hard for the Swans to move and he finished the game with seven goals, while Mick Coad, Luke Edwards, Nick Gibbs, Craig Emmett, Jack Young and Jye Ledin also kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home side after quarter-time.
Ledin was particularly impressive, while Jarrad Mason, Brendon Dillon, Hayden Durston and Jack Young also made significant contributions to win.
Travis Muir, Ryan Lambert, Andrew Green and Paul Arandt served the Swans best, while Cael McCarthy snared four of their seven goals.
Girgarre hammers Longwood
Girgarre notched its fifth win for the season with a 135-point blitz of bottom side Longwood.
The Roos took a quarter to get jumping, but built up speed as the game progressed, saving their best for last with a 10-goal last term.
Big man Ryan Jones with six goals and Shaun Makar with four and Paul Parsons, Zac Atkins and Dylan Smith all snared three goals completed the finishing off work for the visitors.
Smith was a star all day and arguably Girgarre’s best while Dwayne Fitzpatrick and ruckman Tom Roberts also did a lot of telling work in the runaway win.
Craig Coad, Brendan Hamill, Zac Tunks and Brendon Vercoe were Longwood’s better players.
Undera a winner again
Undera broke a five-game losing streak with a hard-earned win over Tallygaroopna.
Tally looked to be in the game at three-quarter-time, trailing by just one point, but the home side rallied in the last term while keeping their rivals goalless to score a 21-point win.
Ruckman Dan Breen was dominant, with Sam O’Brien, Nathan Frizzell, Danni Heazlewood and Jack Hajro all stepping up for Undera. Zac Brett, Adam Serafini, Will Bagley and Brad Stovell were good for the losers.
