Greg Shilling has won his ninth Kyabram Bowls Club singles championship.December 24, 2013 4:32am
Greg Shilling made a triumphant return to Kyabram Bowls Club’s men’s singles competition, taking out his ninth title on Sunday.
After not playing in the competition for the past three years due to ill health, it was an emotional Shilling who prevailed in a great match against a determined Phil Denham.
Shilling won his morning semi-final against John Hausler in another close game.
In the final, Denham started well, scoring a maximum four on the first end, only to see Shilling come back and be all square on the the third end at four-all.
It was all tied up again at 10 shots on the 10th end and by the 13th end, Shilling had a one shot lead, 14-13.
The game took a new dimension, with both players restricting each other from scoring.
Time and again each player was holding multiple shots only for the score to be cut back to one shot either way.
Shilling then started to creep away, scoring three shots to one to be 19-15 ahead. In the next four ends, both players scored three shots, making the score 22-17 Shilling’s way.
This left him needing three shots for the win and the next end that was exactly what he scored.
Spectators agreed they had just seen one of the best grand finals at the club for many years.
