Kyabram's Leanne James won a gold medal and three silvers from her four classes at the 2013 Australian Masters Games
Kyabram’s Leanne James has returned from last week’s 14th Australian Masters Games with one gold and three silver medals.
James took part in the equestrian section, 45-54 age group, and won a gold medal in the ridden mount class and silver in each of the turnout, rider and led classes.
The Masters Games was based at Geelong, but the equestrian events were at Werribee Park.
It was an impressive achievement, particularly considering she has not ridden competitively for more than 30 years.
‘‘I haven’t competed since I was about 15, but I absolutely loved every minute of it,’’ she said.
‘‘It was an absolutely awesome experience, and loads of fun, and I would fully recommend anyone else to have a go.’’
While winning a gold medal was an obvious highlight, she said meeting so many people and mixing with competitors from across Australia was enjoyable.
‘‘Our events were on for three days and I helped out as volunteer as well. The organisers do an amazing job to co-ordinate almost 8000 competitors in 56 sports,’’ she said.
‘‘The level of competition was pretty much as I’d expected but it’s really given me the bug to ride in competitions again.’’
She plans to do some more competitions, but may have to discuss arrangements with her daughter Brittany, 24, who also rides their six-year-old Arabian warm-blood Buckwell Park Chance in competition.
