Ky D graders create history

Kyabram Cricket Club’s D-grade side has claimed a slice of club history by being the first team to snare a premiership in the senior competitions of Cricket Shepparton.
The Peter Ryan-skippered side rolled Mooroopna in the final at the weekend at Vibert Reserve in Shepparton.
The strong Kyabram bowling attack restricted Mooroopna to 117 in the first innings after the Kyabram batsmen had posted 146 after winning the toss and electing to bat on the opening day on Saturday.
Most of the Kyabram batsmen got a start, with Nathan Pell’s 29 the top contribution.
Ryan and Wes Shellie each chipped in with 17 and middle-order batsmen Chris Usher (16) and Brad Power (13) kept the runs ticking over.
Ryan was confident Kyabram was in a winning position at stumps on Saturday after claiming four of Mooroopna’s top batsmen for 64 runs.
There were some anxious moments getting a breakthrough on Sunday, with Kyabram wicketless for the first hour.
But Mooroopna’s batsmen were still finding runs hard to get and once the breakthrough came Kyabram’s bowlers got right on top and provided their side with a 29-run first-innings lead.
Three-wicket hauls to both Power and Geoff Newton were vital contributions for Kyabram in the wash-up.
Kyabram went to the crease a second time, but a half-century from Lucas Hanslow, which included five fours and six, finally forced a Mooroopna surrender in the game.
‘‘Lucas had been having a bad run, but he certainly stood up and put the game out of their reach with his knock,’’ Ryan said.
Ryan said every player had chipped in for the historic win.
‘‘We’ve got a particularly strong bowling line-up and most of us got a start with the bat,’’ he said.
Ryan predicted Brad Power and Wes Shellie, both recovering from shoulder surgery, would play A-grade cricket again next season.
He said he will also go on, but another veteran of the side, Anthony Robinson, was calling it quits.
‘‘Anthony’s been really good for the club for the past 10 years and he’ll be missed.’’
