Benalla playing coach Luke Morgan is the best player in Goulburn Valley Football League.
Morgan was awarded the Morrison Medal at the vote count on Monday night, polling a near-record 35 votes.
‘‘I don’t normally poll too well in these awards, and to poll like I did last night was overwhelming,’’ Morgan said.
‘‘Personally, I feel like I’ve played okay but I don’t think like I’ve played consistently outstanding games, I think I’ve been consistently okay throughout the season.’’
Morgan had nine best-on-ground performances, and polled in an outstanding 13 games.
The 24-year-old finished 19 votes ahead of equal runners-up Jessie Finnen (Shepparton Swans) and Simon Seddon (Kyabram).
Benalla was the highest polling club in the GVFL, with captain James Martiniello (12), Sam Martyn (eight) and Lachie Smith (seven) among those who polled strongly. The Saints had 12 individual vote-getters.
‘‘Obviously the team success has a lot to do with recognition,’’ Morgan said.
‘‘We’ve managed to get the most votes out of any club so it just shows that people outside the club noticed our (good form).’’
Benalla’s A-grade netballers also shone at the vote count, with Grace Thomas receiving the GVNL Rising Star award.
‘‘She works hard on all aspects of her game and has made amazing improvement,’’ coach Robyn Smith said in her nomination of the young netballer.
‘‘She is an exceptional young player with terrific potential.’’
Benalla’s best and fairest winner Tylah Marchbank also polled 15 votes in the Wellman Family Medal.
Olivia Osborne was runner-up in the Carol Ryan 17-and-under Rising Star Award, with Ali Muller finishing seventh.
