Tatong, Swanpool and Goorambat Football Netball Clubs have been given the choice to merge or bow out of next year's Ovens and King Football Netball League competition.By Monique Freer
Merge or fold; they are the only remaining options for Tatong, Swanpool and Goorambat football netball clubs.
Representatives from the embattled Swanpool and Tatong clubs met with the AFL North East Border Commission on Monday and were presented with a plan to merge the three clubs into a new club representing Benalla district in next year’s Ovens and King Football Netball League competition.
However, Goorambat was not present at the meeting, having earlier approached the AFL North East Border Commission about its future.
‘‘They’ve put forward the proposal of the two choices and the choice is either consolidate with Tatong and Goorambat and risk Goorambat being the leading agent, or you don’t play next year — there’s no other option,’’ Swanpool Football Netball Club president Mary Brock said.
The plan would see the new club based at Goorambat, with five home games held at that ground, and two home games held at each of Tatong and Swanpool.
‘‘Primarily you’re looking at Goorambat being the major stakeholder in the consolidation,’’ Brock said.
‘‘It’s not really looking like an equal partnership when it comes to a consolidation.’’
AFL North East Border region general manager John O’Donohue said Goorambat approached the commission recently, but the decision to base the consolidated club at Goorambat was based around location, administration, stability and leadership.
