Flick Wardlaw is blitzing the field in the Subaru National Road Series.By Monique Freer
Benalla cyclist Flick Wardlaw has continued her good form in the two most recent events of the Subaru National Road Series.
Racing as part of the Bicycle Superstore Women’s Road Team, Wardlaw excelled on her home turf in the Sam Miranda event in August, finishing third in general classification.
She then flourished in last week’s Tour of the Murray, finishing second in general classification.
‘‘Our main objective was to maintain my second position over the four classifications and as a bonus we got some really good individual results within the team,’’ Wardlaw said.
‘‘As a team we had two other podiums, about three top 10 finishes and second in the team classification.’’
The local cyclist is currently sitting third overall, and said she hoped to maintain that ranking after next weekend’s National Capital Tour in Canberra.
‘‘I think the next three tours will really suit me so I should be able to maintain that third position,’’ Wardlaw said.
‘‘What makes it challenging now is that a lot of riders that have been racing in Europe are coming back so they’ll be coming back in fine form so it’s going to create an additional challenge.
‘‘Having said that, the standard of this domestic racing has been very, very high and of European standard.’’
The National Capital Tour will be held from September 20 to 22.
‘‘Next week is going to be quite challenging — we’ve gone from really, really flat to quite hilly stages in Canberra,’’ Wardlaw said.
