Benalla cyclist Flick Wardlaw was joined by one of Ireland’s most successful female athletes on Saturday for a training camp at Sam Miranda in the King Valley.
Former long distance running world champion Sonia O’Sullivan joined members of the Bicycle Superstore Women’s Racing Team in a training camp ahead of the Subaru National Road Series – Sam Miranda Tour of the King Valley.
The training focused on bunch riding skills, pedalling efficiency, recovery techniques and energy conservation in a five-day camp.
‘‘It’s just fantastic to be able to race in such a beautiful place and we’re really looking forward to the home ground advantage and great support from friends and family,’’ Wardlaw said.
‘‘To be able to have a training camp a few weeks before the race and having such a phenomenal athlete join us is really motivating.’’
The inaugural Sam Miranda Tour of the King Valley will be held over three days in the King Valley. Stages three and four in the four-stage event will start and finish at Sam Miranda King Valley, with an event village located next to the start/finish line.
‘‘Sam Miranda is the first national road series tour that they’ve had in north-east Victoria, which is pretty awesome and the weekend’s combined with a lot of other cycling events that people can enter,’’ Wardlaw said.
‘‘You get the nation’s top riders, which is quite a unique thing to have right on our back doorstep.’’
The event begins on Friday, August 23 with the Wangaratta criterium and the individual time trial.
Saturday, August 24 will see riders compete in the Oxley road race before taking on the Moyhu-Myrrhee circuit on Sunday, August 25.
