Watching Benalla All Blacks celebrate their 69-point win over Tatong on Saturday, you would not have known the team had just won the wooden spoon.
The All Blacks needed a 140-point victory over the 13th-placed Magpies to move off the bottom of the ladder.
However, having won just their second match of the year in what was termed their ‘grand final’, the final placing did not matter.
‘‘It’s been a lot of hard work and as far as I’m concerned it’s justification for all that hard work,’’ All Blacks coach Gil Ould said.
‘‘It’s very good and I’m very proud of the lads.
‘‘If we had of finished third-last with no improvement that would have been worse. Our last six weeks have been pretty special and full credit to the boys.’’
In the 2013 WorkSafe VCFL Game of the Month Benalla’s Rhys Smith was awarded best on ground, and was presented with his medal by Hawthorn legend Peter Knights.
Benalla All Blacks jumped out to an early lead, keeping Tatong goalless in the first quarter and leading by 32 points at quarter-time.
