The Yarrawonga Football Netball Club has scored an historic hat trick at the 2013 Morris Medal evening held at the SS&A Club in Albury.By Stephen Hicks
In what is believed to be a first, the YFNC won all three football Grades Best and Fairest Awards.
Xavier Leslie, 27, won the highest award of the night becoming the eighth Pigeon to win the Morris Medal as the Senior Ovens and Murray Best and Fairest Winner; polling 21 votes to win by 4 from Albury’s Dean Polo and Wangaratta’s Matt Grossman who was ineligible due to suspension.
Leslie polled in nine games receiving three best on grounds. Leslie also won the OAKFM Player of the Year Award.
In the Reserves stalwart and backline general Ross Mulquiney won the Leo Burke Trophy for the Best and Fairest.
Mulquiney tied with Ash Sibraa from North Albury on 14 votes. Mulquiney polled in seven games. Interesting to note that Albury’s Ben Dower also polled 14 votes but was ineligible due to suspension.
To complete the hat trick of Best and Fairest awards, Damon Symes was successful in the Under 18 Best and Fairest ; the Leo Dean Award receiving 15 votes to tie with Louis Vescio from Wangaratta.
Brandon polled in six games including four Best on Grounds. Symes joins his brother Brandon and sister Hannah as O&M League Best and Fairest winners.
Last weekend, Brandon was a member of the Williamstown Development Team which won the Premiership in the VFL Reserves competition.
Other Pigeons to poll wells included Bridget Cassar who polled 19 votes to finish Runner Up by four votes in the Toni Wilson Medal for A Grade Best and Fairest.
Sarah Wollington polled 13 votes to be the Pigeons second highest vote getter.
In B Grade, Jedda Nolen was the leading Pigeon with 12 votes to finish 10th.
In the Reserves football, with Ross Mulquiney winning the award, Beau Seymour polled 12 votes to finish fourth and Marc Lonergan polled 11 votes to finish sixth.
Tom Ferguson and Jacob Adkins polled 10 votes to finish equal eighth in the Leo Dean Award.
The YFNC stood tall on the Representative stage; with Jarrod Thompson winning the Norm Minns Medal, while Damon Symes also claimed the Peter Johnston Medal.
Both awards were for the OMFNL Best Player at Interleague level.
Laura Bourke received the Netball Interleague Open Players Player Award.
While 15 year old Abbey Jones was a nominee for the SS&A Rising Star Diamond Award after a sensational season and final series thus far for the YFNC A Grade team.
