An after hours medical clinic was officially opened at the hospital last Friday with Yarrawonga Health CEO Terry Welch showing more than 30 guests through the revamped rooms.FIONA BLICK December 17, 2013 3:48pm
The new clinic is situated adjacent to the X-ray rooms with entry via the Lynch Street doors and will be open on Saturdays from 9am until 12 noon and on Sundays and public holidays from 10am until 12 noon; no appointment is necessary.
“Yarrawonga Health has an incredibly committed medical staff and there is a very collegial relationship between the medical staff and the hospital board,” Mr Welch said.
“The board is determined to build upon this good relationship and develop new strategies to complement existing medical practices.”
Mayor of Moira Shire Peter Mansfield said the after hours medical clinic was a fantastic initiative.
“It is imperative we look after the doctors we have in this community,” Mr Mansfield said.
“This initiative will improve the doctors’ lifestyles which in turn will improve patient care.
“Yarrawonga Health is the key health centre to the whole shire and any way Moira Shire can help, then we will.”
Dr Tania Jones spoke on behalf of the doctors in the community saying it will be wonderful to see patients on site at the hospital.
“The doctor on duty will be in a central location and will be able to attend immediately to any emergency,” Dr Jones said.
“They will also be able to call on the nurses to see to patients as needed; it is a wonderful improvement.”
Acting Director of Clinical Services Marg McKenzie said the collaboration with the local doctors was critical.
“The relationships we have with the doctors has increased greatly by our rural training including the Mountains to Murray program,” Ms McKenzie said.
“Also, the telehealth system has been a great initiative.
“It enables specialist emergency doctors in Wangaratta to assess patients in Yarrawonga via the conferencing system after hours, which allows our doctors some much needed rest and relaxation.
“This conferencing system has a capacity to be expanded into further areas.
“And now, with the after hours clinic, doctors will have another stable time frame to work in, allowing them to have a better quality of life.”
