State roads authorities will decide on a route for the new Yarrawonga Mulwala bridge after Corowa and Moira councils could not reach a consensus on a preferred option.By Racheal Willett
Negotiations between the councils failed to deliver a united choice on the bridge route with Corowa consistently and publicly declaring a preference for the grey route, while Moira Shire Council chose not to officially endorse a route option.
VicRoads North Eastern Regional Director Bryan Sherritt told the Yarrawonga Chronicle last week steps had been taken to have the decision made by the roads authorities.
“The Corowa and Moira shire councils have recently advised VicRoads that the decision on the preferred alignment will be made by VicRoads and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) through the Yarrawonga-Mulwala Bridge planning study process,” Mr Sherritt said.
“And both councils will support the recommendations of the planning study for a new bridge crossing location.”
Mr Sherritt said VicRoads and RMS had considered the needs of both councils to ensure the preferred alignment provided an effective transport solution for residential and commercial developments for both Yarrawonga and Mulwala.
“VicRoads is currently completing the details of the preferred alignment and will meet with both councils to outline and discuss the preferred alignment by the end of the year.”
Mr Sherritt said the roads authorities were aiming to complete this phase of the planning study, complete with the recommended bridge route, by the end of June 2014 which is consistent with the original timeline.
Corowa Shire Council’s only Mulwala councillor, Daryl Davey, told the Chronicle he was happy for VicRoads and the RMS to make the bridge choice.
“Sixteen months ago Corowa Shire Council made a decision and we’ve been very upfront about that while the entire time Moira Shire Council has chosen not to make a public choice,” he said.
“The last resolution of Corowa Council on the issue was that as there was no consensus between the councils the decision should fall to the roads authorities and I’m more than happy with that.
“It’s time we got on with it.”
That sentiment was endorsed by Moira Shire Councillor and Yarrawonga resident Peter Mansfield.
“I think that’s absolutely the best way to go,” Cr Mansfield said in response to news the roads authorities would make the choice.
“They are the experts, they’ve done all the planning studies and public consultation and they are in the best place to make the decision on the location of the new bridge.
“And 100% I will support whatever decision they make. This is an important step forward.”
