Yarrawonga father of three, Glenn Soutter, capped off the ultimate Christmas surprise by sinking a “life changing” hole-in-one that earned him a $140,000 block of land at Silverwoods Golf and Lifestyle Resort.JARED LOUGHNAN December 31, 2013 10:44am
Around 1,300 balls were hit at the hole from 140 metres away during the annual Summer Fun Lifestyle Expo on Sunday before Glenn attempted his winning 12th shot at 3.15pm.
“I was stunned. It was very windy so I tried a pitching wedge rather than a seven iron and it worked,” said Glenn who boasts a handicap of 8.
“I saw Jeremy Roscoe jumping up and down on the green and I knew it had to be close and soon found out it was in.”
Glenn, who works as a greens-keeper at the course, immediately rang wife Shelley who was at the expo with the kids.
“At first she thought I was joking. Then local professional James McCully also rang her and so did Jan McCully, then I think she was convinced.
“This will set us up for the next few years. We were renting but have just bought the old Piper Street Milk Bar site which we have plans to convert into two salons while living in the back residence. Now we can start planning a house in the next few years. It is really life changing,” Glenn said.
But Glenn said he had a nervous wait until 5pm before he knew the block of land, located on Phillip Hyland Drive, was actually his.
“If another person had sunk another hole-in-one we then had to go to a one ball, nearest to the pin play off, to see who would ultimately win.
“I was trying to put as many people off that I knew,” Glenn said jokingly.
“I would like to thank the Bozzo family and all the Silverwoods team for putting up such a fantastic prize and a great day,” he said.
Managing Director of the Silverwoods Developing company, Lotus Living, Peter Bozzo said it was great to see the prize go to a local resident.
“I am so thrilled to hand over this fantastic major prize of a golf course block of land worth $140,000,” Mr Bozzo said.
The Summer Fun and Lifestyle Expo attracted more than 1,000 people on Sunday. The annual event is held on the 5th fairway and features kids rides, water ski shows, kayaking, climbing tower and of course Australia’s biggest hole-in-one competition.
