Moira Shire Deputy Mayor Cr Wendy Buck has announced she will stand as an independent candidate for the seat of Murray in the September 7 federal election.By Fiona Blick
Cr Buck told the Yarrawonga Chronicle she has long believed that Murray is missing out on federal government funding as the region is viewed as a safe seat.
“Murray is a safe seat and we are continually seeing money going to marginal seats instead of us,” Cr Buck said.
“I want to raise awareness of this issue and use this election to recognise this fact.
“I am a dyed in the wool National Party supporter but I will be standing as an independent; I do not want Murray to be a safe seat any more.”
Cr Buck said if you have a belief then you must be prepared to stand up and “put your money where your mouth is”.
“I have basically put everything on the line to run in this election,” she said.
“But I have decided to do this because the Murray electorate has been missing out on money for transport and medical infrastructure and it is time we narrowed the gap so we attract more services.
“I want to see this region have a strong voice in the decisions that affect them and their incomes.”
This is not a spur of the moment decision by Cr Buck, she said she had been thinking about standing in the upcoming federal election for “some time”.
“I am already lobbying for on-farm infrastructure, water, waste and roads by being a local councillor,” Cr Buck said.
“I will continue to proactively work for Moira Shire and Northern Victoria if I am elected, that will never change.
“I am extremely committed to my community.”
Cr Buck welcomed a public forum with all candidates for the Murray electorate present to discuss topical issues.
“We need real people who are doing real work in the community to stand for election,” she said.
“I am not sure yet exactly who I will be directing my preferences towards but it will definitely by any independent candidates.
“I am determined to narrow the gap and show Canberra that Murray is not a safe seat.”
If Cr Buck does succeed in winning the seat of Murray she said she will have to resign her position as Moira Shire Councillor.
“Despite this, my fellow councillors have been very supportive,” she said.
“They are a great bunch of people and it is a terrific environment to work in.
“All the people I have spoken to, either at work, as a councillor or just passing in the street have been extremely supportive.
“I am very moved and feel very privileged and this has given me motivation to work even harder for them.”
