The 2013 Cod Classic was a “ripper” with fishermen, women and kids from far and wide descending upon Lake Mulwala to try their hand at catch the most elusive of fish.December 10, 2013 4:21pm
A total of 2,653 competitors, 2,210 adults and 443 juniors, endured windy and wet weather on Friday with Saturday dawning as almost perfect fishing conditions.
Fish numbers were slightly down on previous years with 203 Murray Cod, 181 Golden Perch and 1,700 caught over the weekend.
Michael Maher took out the honour of catching the longest cod at 113cm which he snared on a trolled Custom Crafted lure.
Brock Pierce was the Junior Longest Cod winner, landing a 108cm monster.
Upon registration, all juniors received a Wilson Slickback Lure, Bassman Spinnerbait, and a chance of another lucky dip prize; throw in a dozen specially autographed lures and many fishing section prizes and the kids went away with some great rewards.
For the adults, 2,050 competitors received minor lucky door prizes.
On top of this there were 110 major lucky door and fishing section prizes to add to the awesome prize pool package.
Competition winners included Friday entrant Brian Courney, Lancefield; early entry Peter Plytus, Newport; Cod C&R Bradley Sharman, Harden; Carp Boat Tom Webster, Benalla; raffle winner David McManus, Gembrook; adult lucky door Daniel Hartwell, Crookwell; junior lucky door Jake Stoeckel, Renmark; Junior O/A Champion Angler Tom Webster; Lady Champion Angler Ann Brzybysz; Longest Yella Adult Shane Davies 59cm, Junior Alex Hawke 51cm; and Longest Carp Michael Makoshev 84cm.
The best represented club at this year’s Lake Mulwala Cod Classic was the Cobar Fishing Club which had 24 of its members attending.
