The Rotary Club of Tatura is inviting local first-year university students to apply for the Bruce Anderson Scholarship.

Rotary president Sam Lolicato said the scholarship provided $1000 assistance with university studies for the successful applicant.

Dr Bruce Anderson (1936-2009) served for many years as veterinarian in the Tatura district. He served 22 years in private practice at the Tatura Vet Clinic and 13 years as a government vet.

According to the conditions of a bequest offered by Dr Anderson and his family, young Australians living in the extended Tatura district can apply for the $1000 ‘‘to assist and encourage them to participate in first year university education’’.

Mr Lolicato said to be considered, applicants must be aged 17 to 22 years old, reside in the Tatura area, or more specifically in the area bounded by the Goulburn River in the north and east, the Northern Hwy in the west and the Murchison-Bendigo Rd in the south, taking in Tatura, Mooroopna, Kyabram, Rochester, Elmore, Rushworth, Murchison and all the smaller settlements in between (but not Shepparton and Echuca), have been accepted into a registered Australian university degree course, submit a detailed written application, and be willing to be interviewed by a small independent panel nominated by the Tatura Rotary Club.

‘‘It is also desirable that applicants have a good academic record, are active members of the community, and are in genuine need of financial assistance,’’ Mr Lolicato said.

He said written applications must include a copy of an official document accepting enrolment in a registered Australian university degree course (including contact telephone numbers for the course registrar); a full resume, including full residential and contact details, age, educational and work history, achievements, hobbies and sporting and community interests; a copy of VCE results; contact details of Year-12 co-ordinator; contact details of an academic referee, and contact details of a character referee.

‘‘Also the student will deliver a brief talk on their personal development — past, present and future — and how it relates to their chosen field of study. The scholarship money will be delivered to the student immediately after the progress results are verified,’’ Mr Lolicato said.

Applications for the scholarship close on February 20 and should be addressed to: Bruce Anderson Scholarship, Rotary Club of Tatura, PO Box 227, Tatura 3616.
