Ballarat-based jockey Craig Robertson, whose mother died last week, rode like a man possessed at Tatura on Saturday, winning three of the six races, two for Flemington trainer Mark Kavanagh.
The highlight of Robertson’s three wins was the 14-length win in the Tatura and Shepparton Racing Club Beast of the North East over the marathon 3000 m, breaking the track record on the Steven Lake-trained Master’s Degree, the short-priced favourite.
And being one of the state’s more senior riders, Robertson was quick to let his younger rivals know that age and experience will beat youth any day.
Robertson’s two Kavanagh wins were on Present Glow ($5.10) in the TAC Only A Little Bit Over? Maiden Plate over 1000 m and Joint Initiative ($2.70) in the Winning Edge Presentations 0-58 Handicap over 1000 m.
With Super Cool running in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley later in the day, and having lost the ‘pre-post’ favourite Atlantic Jewel to injury during the week, Kavanagh was not on course to see the wins.
Other winners on Saturday were Duke’s Delight for jockey Lincoln Coffey and Cranbourne trainer Steven Theodore, Finnegan Beginegan for Ryan Hurdle and Bendigo’s Paul Banks, and Our Smokin’ Rock for Katelyn Mallyon and Mornington’s Wez Hunter.
