On Thursday, August 8, Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility had a visit from an unusual patient. Administration assistant Susan McCready told the Guardian that a large pelican crash landed into the wall of the main entrance with a loud bang, shaking the whole side wall of the building.
Ms McCready said the poor pelican was dazed, unable to fly and a little frightened by the attention he was receiving from passers by and he headed for the road.
‘‘The forever caring nurses at the hospital herded him into the enclosed area at the front of the hospital where he was safe until the vet arrived,’’ she said.
‘‘Once he was settled in the enclosure his neck started to shake and twist, staff thought his time was coming to end, when out popped a huge carp from his belly. And the carp was still alive with its gills flapping.’’
Ms McCready said the pelican felt much better and toddled off, but he was still unable to fly.
She said the vet arrived and managed to catch him with a big bear hug inside a blanket.
He was carted off to the vet where they kept him for a day before releasing him back to the wetlands at Cussen Park with his friends.
Ms McCready said the pelican was grateful for the care shown by the staff at Tatura Hospital, which shows how much staff care for all creatures, not only the human variety.
‘‘The fate of the carp is unknown,’’ she said.
