A 31-year-old Melbourne man will appear in court charged with lighting a fire on a total fire ban day.

Murchison police Leading Senior Constable Ricky Keast said on Saturday, December 8 he was patrolling Goulburn River camping areas at Murchison when he found three Melbourne men with a large camp fire about 7pm.

‘‘The male claimed to have lit the fire to keep warm during the night,’’ Ldg Sen Const Keast said.

He noted the temperature was about 34°C.

‘‘The penalties for lighting fires illegally during the Fire Danger Period and on Total Fire Ban Days include large fines and possible imprisonment. Ignorance is not an excuse,’’ he said.
