A red light being run resulted in a three-car collision at an intersection in Shepparton.By Riahn Smith
A Shepparton woman was taken to hospital on Monday night after the car she was driving drove through a red light and crashed into two cars at a busy Shepparton intersection.
Shepparton police Highway Patrol Senior Constable Barry McLeod said the white Toyota Rav4 was travelling north on Welsford St when the driver, 25, failed to stop at the Fryers St traffic lights.
He said the car was hit by a black Ford sedan travelling east on Fryers St, causing it to lose control and hit a southbound vehicle waiting to turn right into Fryers St.
He said the woman’s car jumped across the intersection and struck a road sign before coming to a stop on the raised concrete median strip.
Sen Const McLeod said the Toyota suffered extensive damage and was towed from the scene, along with the Ford sedan.
He said the woman was taken to Goulburn Valley Base Hospital for observation while the drivers of the other vehicles — a Shepparton man, 48, and a Mooroopna man, 54 — were uninjured.
The woman was given a $361 penalty notice for driving through a red light and lost three demerit points.
Sen Const McLeod urged motorists to pay attention to the road, even when driving through familiar areas.
‘‘People need to be vigilant when going through intersections,’’ he said.
‘‘Drivers should really take extra care when approaching traffic lights.’’
The intersection was closed for about an hour while the scene was cleared.
