A tip for anyone wanting to get the attention of a teenager — just mention the word ‘‘selfie.’’
Taking a ‘‘selfie’’ refers to taking a self-portrait using the front facing camera of a phone or tablet and is a popular past time for Gen Ys.
So it is no surprise a Numurkah Secondary College initiative that asks students to take selfies in exchange for career advice is already off to a great start.
‘‘Career selfies’’ are the brainchild of the school’s careers adviser Fay Scadden and Year 10 Beacon Foundation ambassador Tori Tetley.
As part of the project, the school’s Year 10 students are encouraged to take a selfie and upload it to Facebook with a caption stating what career they are interested in, and a question for locals who are already working in that field. Sixteen students have already taken up the challenge and, although the project is only a few weeks old, it is proving to be successful.
Aspiring journalist Tori, 15, said she had received several replies to her selfie.
‘‘I had one that said I should help out with the Katunga Football Club’s newsletter, so I’ll be starting with that, and I’d also like to do some work experience in a bigger city,’’ she said.
‘‘I want to be a journalist because I like going out and getting the goss and sharing it around the town so everyone knows what is going on.’’
Ms Scadden said she was happy to use her students’ love of selfies to help them develop their career paths.
‘‘I’m already used to leaving the room and coming back to my iPad full of selfies from the students,’’ she said.
‘‘So we thought we’d take that a step further and try to appeal to the kids on their level. If they do get a reply to their selfie, they win a chocolate bar of their choice.’’
Ms Scadden said several local businesses ‘‘liked’’ the Facebook page, which can be found by searching ‘‘Numurkah Beacon’’.
She said people who saw the selfies were welcome to tag their friends if they thought they could help the students with their queries.
