St Mel's Catholic Church priest Father Joven Lustre says the Goulburn Valley's generosity has overwhelmed him following an appeal to help Super Typhoon Haiyan victims in the Philippines.

St Mel’s priest Father Joven Lustre has thanked the region’s fundraising efforts in the wake of deadly Filipino Super Typhoon Haiyan.

Almost $42000 was raised for Caritas Manila and Australia through fundraising drives largely organised by Goulburn Valley’s Filipino community and Shepparton’s St Mel’s Catholic Church.

‘‘The generous response has been overwhelming, not just from St Mel’s parishioners, but from beyond Shepparton,’’ Father Lustre said.

He said the large sum of money raised had surpassed his expectations.

‘‘I’m surprised that so much was raised in such a short time, but it confirms the great generosity of Australians in times of need,’’ he said.

He said the church was still collecting tin cans of food to be sent to the typhoon-affected area.

He urged people to continue to donate to typhoon victims through Caritas Australia.
