Two of the community’s most respected policemen were among those remembered yesterday as part of National Police Remembrance Day.
Tatura Leading Senior Constable Francis ‘‘Frank’’ Hogan and Benalla Leading Senior Constable Brendan Lynch were among the 16 names added to the Victoria Police honour roll for officers who died in the past year.
Sen Const Hogan died of cancer in March and Sen Const Lynch and was killed the same month when his bike and a bus collided on the Hume Fwy.
National Police Remembrance Day takes place on September 29 and a service was at St Brendan’s Church in Shepparton yesterday.
More than 100 local police and community members gathered to light candles for fallen police officers.
Acting Inspector Mark Byers spoke at the service and urged people to remember police officers who had given their lives in fulfilling their responsibilities as members of the police force.
‘‘When we remember people, those people become present to us,’’ Insp Byers said.
‘‘We pause for a moment of silence to recall fallen members.
‘‘They and their deeds will be remembered.’’
