Trees cause debate among Nicholas St residents
your story - The people of Nicholas St have had mixed opinions and emotions about new trees planted by the council.
By Jade Newey, Guthrie St Primary SchoolIn a quiet and calm street near McGuire College at the south end of Shepparton the council has recently planted trees on the nature strip in front of people’s houses.
The people of Nicholas St have had mixed opinions and emotions about the trees.
After interviewing the council I have found out some very interesting information.
Council said the trees were planted because it wants the street to be beautified and its goal was to have a tree in front of every house.
Council also told me it did not have to notify the people of the street, which was a big problem and it estimated the trees would cost about $2000 to plant.
Out of interest I found out that the council shouldn’t plant trees in front of houses with fire hydrants or telephone poles.
When speaking to the people of Nicholas St about the trees, one resident said they found the tree after getting home from work.
They said they were not notified and they rang the council three times, but council never got back to them.
Another resident of the street who didn’t get a tree has said they didn’t get a tree because they rang the council before the tree was planted and they also told me they were glad they didn’t get the trees because they were too messy.
The conclusion is that the people don’t want the trees and council should have told them they were putting the trees in.
