Police have confirmed the driver of the ute is the father of the 18-month-old girl now in a critical condition at the Royal Childrens Hospital.
The man is currently at Benalla Police Station assisting police with enquiries.
Seymour police Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Andrew Wright said the investigation was ongoing but speed had been ruled out as a contributing factor.
“We’re going to be looking at fatigue,” Acting Sgt Wright said.
Two members of Seymour Highway Patrol and four members of the Major Collision Investigation Unit are currently on scene.
Acting Sgt Wright said the southbound lane of the Hume Fwy would be opened within the hour.
Police said a 35-year-old man from St Kilda is assisting them with their enquries following a crash in Euroa this morning.
An 18-month-old girl is still in a critical condition.
