Goulburn Valley farmers have been left bemused by the theft of nine gates from their properties in the past week.By Riahn Smith
Nine farm gates have been stolen from properties in Dhurringile and Moorilim during the past week.
Murchison police Leading Senior Constable Ricky Keast said two farms on Stewart Rd, Dhurringile, were targeted overnight on Wednesday last week.
He said two gates worth $200 were removed from one property, while five gates worth $550 were stolen from a neighbouring farm.
Another two gates, valued at $290, were taken from a Pretty Johns Rd property in Moorilim overnight on Friday.
Leading Sen Const Keast said the spate of thefts was disappointing.
‘‘In a rural community farmers rely on people to be honest,’’ he said.
‘‘You’ve got stock that can wander because the gates have been removed and farmers really don’t need the inconvenience of replacing gates.
‘‘We’ve had antique farm gates stolen, but we haven’t had a spate of these gates being stolen like this before.’’
He urged the public to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
‘‘These gates are likely to be sold at clearing sales,’’ he said.
‘‘Normal farm gates generally sell second hand for about $50 to $60, so someone’s pretty desperate I imagine.
‘‘Someone must know something.
‘‘(The offenders) would have had to have had a trailer to take them away and it would have taken some time too, so hopefully someone has seen something.’’
