Goulburn Valley Water's Darren Sharman has come across some odd bits and pieces that have been flushed down the toilet in Shepparton. Unfortunately it causes problems for the organisation that operates the city's wastewater system.By Rhiannon Gavalakis
False teeth, wallets, mobile phones and children’s toys are just a few of the weird wonders that have ended up at Goulburn Valley Water’s wastewater management facility.
But these unusual sewer finds pose a risk — blocked pipes that cost tens of thousands of dollars each year to repair.
‘‘That stuff doesn’t break down and it only needs to catch somewhere and build up to cause a blockage,’’ Central Wastewater Treatment district manager Darren Sharman said.
‘‘We can’t have it going into our treatment plants — we spend a lot of money moving it from homes to here and then taking it out.’’
Items found at the Wastewater Management Facility
McDonald’s Happy Meal Toys
Feminine hygiene products
Large blocks of wood (though larger items like this tend to happen at construction sites where the pipe is exposed, rather than being flushed)
Plastic toilet freshener cages
