Denise Clark said she received a phone call from a person claiming to be from the Federal Government’s reclaim department this week.
‘‘They told me I had been overcharged by my bank on various transactions and the Federal Government was going to pay me $5248,’’ Ms Clark said.
‘‘They gave me a name and phone number and a claim number and told me to phone them to confirm the payment with their supervisor.’’
She said she was then asked if she wanted the money put into her bank account or through a cheque.
When she requested a cheque, the person told her there was a $199 administration fee.
‘‘I asked if they could take that out of the cheque, because I didn’t have the money and all of a sudden they were back pedaling really fast, then they hung up.’’
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s website www.scamwatch.gov.au confirmed the phone call was a scam.
It said people who received a phone call out of the blue claiming they were entitled to a refund should hang up immediately.
