Rain and scattered thunderstorms that swept across the region yesterday will return today.

Bureau of Meteorology figures show Shepparton recorded 26mm to 7pm yesterday, the first decent drop of rain in nearly a month.

Today’s forecast is for more scattered showers, possible hail and the chance of thunderstorms from late morning and daytime temperatures in the high teens.

A vigorous cold front and associated low pressure system passing just south of Tasmania was responsible for the rainfall and as the front passes through, it will make way for a cold south-westerly airflow.

The next high pressure system will move across the Great Australian Bight and reach Victoria tomorrow, bringing lighter winds and temperatures in the mid to high-20°C range during the weekend.

Rainfall across the region was generally around 20mm, but there were higher totals including 29.4mm in Tatura, Kyabram 29.8mm, Benalla 24mm and Lake Eildon 40mm.

Areas to the south and east of Euroa had as much as 45mm, as did alpine areas.
