Goulburn Murray Soccer Academy to give young people access to professional soccer coaching and help them gain qualifications.JOHN LEWIS December 26, 2013 4:04am
Budding soccer talents can gain professional coaching and build skills for a career in sport with the launch of a new sports academy in Shepparton.
The Goulburn Murray Soccer Academy aims to bring professional soccer coaches from Melbourne to Shepparton for weekly training sessions, and provide qualifications for people who want to work in community, recreation and sporting industries.
Goulburn Murray Local Learning and Employment Network project officer Rashidi Sumaili said the academy hoped to build on an established network of soccer enthusiasts who gathered at Shepparton’s Victory Park in St Georges Rd for friendly matches every week.
‘‘There are not many opportunities in the country for young people to gain access to professional coaches. This will help young people to improve their skills,’’ Mr Sumaili said.
He said training would be provided through Melbourne-based training provider Smart Connection Training, which would offer the Certificate III Community Activity Program qualification.
He said the academy would accept young people aged between 15 and 25 who wished to improve their soccer and sporting skills.
He said 15 keen soccer players had already signed up, with places available for up to 25.
