A Shepparton family has spotted two snakes canoodling beside a road.By Chloe Warburton
A Shepparton family got a close look at nature at the weekend when it spotted two randy brown snakes on the side of Wanganui Rd.
Ben and Melissa Elliott and their three children were driving on Wanganui Rd on Sunday when they spotted the grass rustling on the side of the road.
They stopped to watch the snakes, but stayed within the safety of the car.
‘‘We thought they were fighting, but I think they may have been courting,’’ Mr Elliott said.
‘‘We were scared, but it was also amazing — we’ve never seen them in the wild like that.
‘‘Part of me wanted to run over them, but part of me wanted to watch.
We told the kids, ‘This is how snakes cuddle’.’’
Merrigum snake catcher Craig Bergman said snakes were starting to become more active as the weather warmed up.
Mr Bergman warned people to be vigilant, especially at night.
‘‘Snakes have been out all year around — they don’t actually go into hibernation, but they do become more active,’’ he said.
‘‘If you find a snake, keep an eye on it if possible and ring myself or another snake catcher.
‘‘Night time is when snakes are most active. Keep an eye on your front and back door, because if the concrete around it is warm, they’ll just curl up there for extra warmth.’’
Mr Bergman said he was getting about one call per day for snakes at the moment and it did not take much heat for snakes to venture out.
‘‘Even at temperatures of 17 or 18 degrees, or even 16 degrees, they’ll start coming out,’’ he said.
