A Shepparton man has been airlifted to Melbourne after the truck he was travelling in collided with a tree in NSW last night.

Albury police Highway Patrol Sergeant Matt Zemaitis said the man, 48, was travelling south on the Hume Highway near Holbrook about 8.45pm when the truck hit a tree.

Sgt Zamaitis said it took about an hour and a half for emergency services to release the man from the truck.

The man was taken to Albury Base Hospital and later airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition.
