Farmer Darryl Sheridan's petting zoo was one of the most popular attraction's at the weekend's KidsFest activities in Shepparton.By Rhiannon Horrell
Farmer Darryl Sheridan was yesterday keeping an eye on everything from goats to piglets as part of his petting zoo visit to KidsFest.
Caring for animals is something Mr Sheridan has done all his life.
He grew up on a farm in Donald, near Horsham.
‘‘My dad was a wheat, sheep and cattle farmer. My father died early,’’ he said.
Mr Sheridan said he worked in a bank for 10 years and a carpet store for 10 years.
He said he also suffered a bout of meningiccocal meningitis and after the illness he decided to start a petting zoo and take animals to events.
He now travels around Victoria and NSW.
‘‘I’ve been taking animals to events for 14 years. This is our fifth year at KidsFest,’’ Mr Sheridan said.
He said the animals were also ‘‘mobile munchers’’ and he’d transport them to different locations to help keep the grass down.
‘‘We’re all about entertainment and education,’’ he said of the petting zoo.
‘‘We’ve got different eggs and we get the kids to work out which animal laid the eggs. It’s about the kids interacting with the animals.’’
Mr Sheridan said his farm also had reindeer for Christmas events.
‘‘We come to Shepparton a lot,’’ the Kyneton resident said.
He said some animals were bottlefed and there was a chance for children to groom the animals.
‘‘It’s a rural atmosphere we provide. It gives town kids a chance to interact with the animals.’’
