More than 100 people visited Shepparton institution Star Bowl last week for a celebration of the bowling alley turning 50.By Estelle Griepink
Star Bowl’s 50th anniversary provided some nostalgia for centre manager Melissa Thompson.
‘‘I’ve been bowling for 25 years, so I’ve sort of grown up here. I have lots of memories,’’ Mrs Thompson, 38, said.
‘‘My whole family bowls, it’s been a big part of our lives.
‘‘From wooden lanes and writing your scores down with a pencil, to synthetic lanes and digital scoreboards — the technology has come on in leaps and bounds.’’
Mrs Thompson said 120 people gathered at the bowling alley last Saturday to celebrate its history.
They included bowlers who had played in the same league for 20 years.
Life members Denece Jones and Pat Thorpe said they had been bowling for a combined 60 years.
‘‘I started when I was in school and I just love it — I’ve become more and more involved,’’ Mrs Jones said.
‘‘I started on the counter and worked my way up to general manager — I’ve seen lots of changes,’’ Mrs Thorpe said.
Mrs Thompson said people could enjoy bowling no matter their age. ‘‘Age is no limit, even if you’re 90 you can still get a ball down the ramp,’’ Mrs Thompson said.
‘‘You’re also not limited if you have a disability.’’
Mrs Thompson said she was keen to include as many people as possible in the activity.
‘‘We’re hoping to organise an autistic league and another disability league — we want to get it out there that we’re here to help.’’
