Concern has been raised about access to a Victoria Park Lake barbecue site after Indigenous elders took a trip there last week.By John Lewis
A concern about wheelchair access to a Victoria Park Lake barbecue site has been met with a positive response from Greater Shepparton City Council.
Rumbalara Elders Facility activities co-ordinator Sonja Briggs-Parsons said she took seven elders to the sheltered barbecue facility at Con Paling reserve at the south-eastern end of the lake last week, but was disappointed to find no concrete pathways meant access was difficult.
‘‘Two elders were in wheelchairs and three had walking frames. We found it really difficult to cross the grass — it was very spongy,’’ Ms Briggs-Parsons said.
She said pushing wheelchairs was hard going, while elders using walking frames felt unsafe.
‘‘I was concerned for their safety,’’ she said.
She said it was the elders’ first trip out in the facility’s new bus.
‘‘It was disappointing it wasn’t safe. We would like to back there often,’’ she said.
Ms Briggs-Parsons said wheelchair access to the reserve’s toilet block was also difficult.
Council’s infrastructure director Steve Bowmaker said design works had been completed for a new barbecue and shelter in the reserve for delivery this financial year.
He said the new facility would be closer to the existing toilet block and would feature accessible pathways between the toilet block and the shelter, and between the shelter and the lakeside shared pathway.
‘‘The whole area will receive a much-needed facelift through this project as well as improving access for people of all ages and abilities,’’ Mr Bowmaker said.
