The Goulburn Valley Chinese Fellowship Association invites you to welcome in the new year.
Fellowship president Evelyn Anderson said new comers to the region are encouraged to come along and socialise over a casual lunch at Shepparton ACE College.
Chinese New Year was officially celebrated on Monday, January 23, and is based on the Chinese calendar consisting of twelve months, each with 30 days.
Mrs Anderson said the dragon was the most powerful sign of the Chinese zodiac.
She said people celebrating will often wear red clothing and hang red decorations which represented prosperity.
‘‘It is tradition to receive a ‘red packet’ which contains Chinese coins as a blessing; they represent happiness, prosperity and loyalty.’’
There are 30 families who are members of the GV Chinese Fellowship Association, and assist with the arrival of Chinese immigrants to Greater Shepparton.
Mrs Anderson said most immigrants come to work as doctors, engineers and in other professional positions.
‘‘Some just need the chance to get into a social circle and mingle and make new friends,’’ Mrs Anderson said.
‘‘Kong Xi Fatt Cai–wishing you a prosperous new year.’’For bookings phone Evelyn on 5825 1001 or Michael on 5821 3737. Celebrations are on Sunday, February 5, at noon, at Shepparton ACE College, 130 Rowe St, Shepparton. Guests are encouraged to bring a plate of food to share.
