Former Labor industry minister Greg Combet has been appointed to advise the Federal Coalition Government on assistance for SPC Ardmona.

The panel also includes Telstra chairwoman Catherine Livingstone and respected businessman Dick Warburton.

The fruit-processing company is seeking $25 million in assistance from the federal and Victorian governments.

In a bid to remain viable, SPC has cut contracts with suppliers, forcing some growers into bankruptcy.

Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane says the panel will provide him with independent advice on SPC's specific request for assistance.

SPC's parent company, Coca-Cola Amatil, says it will invest $50 million and use the combined funds to consolidate factories and develop more innovative food-processing lines.
