Our next generation of firefighters
Firefighters visit Guthrie St Childcare Centre.
By Ashleigh Williamson
Ratu Manasa Nainoca wants to be a firefighter when he grows up.
Marlee Tweddle does not want the same job, but her career ambition could involve caring for fire victims.
‘‘I want to be a doctor,’’ Marlee, 4, said.
Marlee, Ratu and their friends at Guthrie St Childcare Centre had a special visit from three Shepparton firefighters on Thursday.
The firefighters showed the children the protective gear they wear during a fire and taught them about fire safety.
The children crawled under a parachute and they also demonstrated the ‘‘stop, drop and roll’’ technique to practice avoiding smoke during a fire.
Ratu, 5, said people should phone triple zero if a fire started.
‘‘If you touch fire, you will be burnt,’’ he said.
Marlee said people should not try to salvage valuables from their house if it caught fire.
‘‘Stand back (from the fire) and wait at your mailbox,’’ she said.
The firefighters then showed the children equipment in their fire engine.
The children enjoyed spraying the engine’s hose and watching its flashing lights.
