A tall yellow orchid in full-bloom took out top honours as part of the weekend’s Goulburn Valley Orchid Spectacular.
The event attracted people from across Victoria to the venue at the Shepparton Harness Racing Club.
Kirwin’s Bridge couple Colin and Noelle Cleak took out the champion of the show category for their Blazing Dream Tee Pee orchid.
‘‘They all show off well. It presents beautifully,’’ Goulburn Valley Orchid Club vice-president Barry Russell said of the winning plant.
Reserve champion went to a purple and white orchid — a dendrobium kingianum.
Mr Russell said orchids were judged on the size, shape and colour of the flowers as well as the general appearance of the plant.
Mr Russell said this year’s show had been the most successful yet.
‘‘We’ve had 400 entries and around 30 exhibitors. It’s the biggest show we’ve ever had,’’ he said.
‘‘We’ve had visitors from up in the Snowy Mountains, people from Melbourne and visitors from Stawell.
‘‘(Saturday) was jam-packed all day.’’
Mr Russell said organisers set up early to allow for residents of a local retirement home to come through before the weekend.
‘‘They absolutely loved it,’’ he said.
Winning orchid grower Mr Cleak said he had been tending to the flowers for 11 years and did not expect to take out the top prize.
‘‘It’s a quality orchid. It’s an orchid that presents itself well — it’s got intense colour,’’ he said.
