Dale Fraser, the new Goulburn Valley Health chief executive, is pushing for a more community-driven approach to health.By Estelle Griepink
Goulburn Valley Health’s new chief executive Dale Fraser has a positive, community-driven vision for the future of the hospital.
Mr Fraser joined GV Health in June this year, leaving an impressive legacy behind at Barwon Health.
During his time there, the organisation was named the Regional Health Service of the Year at the 2011 Premier’s Health Service of the Year awards.
Mr Fraser told The News he saw his role as a fantastic opportunity.
‘‘Regional Victoria is where I’ve grown up and where I’ve worked,’’ Mr Fraser said. ‘‘Shepparton is a major provincial town and its health services have a good reputation — the hospital is one of the big five in the regions.’’
Mr Fraser said his vision for the hospital included the Goulburn Valley community embracing what he called the age of volunteerism.
‘‘We want to engage people to support us not just financially, but with their time, skills and expertise,’’ he said.
‘‘Clearly, we still would receive financial support — people are very generous in their giving — but for those who can’t, we want to give them the opportunity to feel like they are supporting a community asset like ours.’’
Mr Fraser said he also wanted the community to have more input into the decision making of the hospital.
‘‘We want people making informed decisions about the health services they are recipients of .
‘‘We know what we are doing from a health professional perspective, but until you put yourself in the seat or the bed of the paitent, you really don’t see the service through their eyes.’’
Mr Fraser said he did not intend to leave Shepparton any time soon.
‘‘I’m on a long-term contract, I’m planning on buying a house here,’’ he said.
‘‘Shepparton has a good vibe, and I’ve been really impressed with the level of friendliness and support.’’
