Police are investigating why a man fled a Mooroopna crash scene yesterday while his female passenger was trapped in the ute that had rolled.
The crash, between a light-coloured Ford Fairmont and a white Nissan Navara ute at the intersection of Banfield Ave and Lenne St, occurred shortly before 3
Leading Senior Constable Murray Moser of Shepparton Highway Patrol said the ute was travelling west on Lenne St and towing a trailer.
He said the Ford, driven by a 28-year-old Mooroopna woman, exited Banfield Ave and the two cars collided.
Leading Sen Const Moser said the ute rolled following the impact.
He said the woman in the ute, a 26-year-old from Shepparton, was taken to Goulburn Valley Base Hospital with suspected shoulder or collarbone injuries.
Leading Sen Const Moser said she was trapped for a short time because her door was jammed.
‘‘The driver of the ute has decamped,’’ he said. ‘‘We’re still investigating .
Incident controller Amber Feehan said Shepparton and Mooroopna fire crews attended the call-out and spent time clearing the scene.
Lenne St resident Tony Nash said he was the first one to reach the trapped woman.
‘‘I was pulling glass out of her arm and she said, ‘He’s gone’.’’
He said he understood she was referring to the man who was also in the ute and who had left the accident scene.
Another Lenne St resident, who did not wish to be named, heard the crash and went outside.
He said a man ran past.
‘‘He ran straight past me and headed down Lenne St — I thought he was going to get help.’’
A spokeswoman for the hospital said the injured woman was yesterday in a stable condition with minor injuries.
