Man airlifted after Southern 80 crash

There were bumper crowds and plenty of action, but this weekend's Southern 80 event on the Murray River also saw a number of serious crashes.

By Darren Linton

Thousands of people lined the Murray River between Torrumbarry and Echuca yesterday as the big guns competed in the Southern 80 Ski Race.

More than 10000 people packed the area around the finish line to watch the boats, towing two skiers at speeds of up to 170km/h.

By the time the crews reached Echuca they had successfully navigated more than 120 bends — although the weekend’s racing was not without incident.

During the main race yesterday a boat hit a jetty near Pianta Rd throwing the navigator from the cockpit.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson confirmed the 39 year-old was airlifted to hospital with severe leg fractures.

On Saturday a skier from team Blazen was airlifted to Royal Melbourne hospital in a serious but stable condition after falling while competing in the Bakers’ Blitz.

More Southern 80 action:

Ambulance Victoria said the skier, 32, suffered head and possibly spinal injuries.

This year’s three-day event attracted 599 entries.
