Longest day of year is today

December 22 is the summer solstice.

By Kristin Favaloro

Today is the longest day of the year in the southern hemisphere — and is officially known as the summer solstice.

‘‘After this, the days will gradually become shorter until we reach the autumnal equinox on March 20, 2012,’’ The Weather Channel chief meteorologist Dick Whitaker said yesterday.

‘‘On this date, day and night will become equal.

Mr Whitaker said at the summer solstice, the sun would be directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn, which goes through the middle of the Queensland city of Rockhampton.

‘‘So at noon (today) the sun will be directly above Rockhampton,’’ he said.

‘‘In astrology, the summer solstice is known as Litha and the autumnal equinox is Mabon.’’

Power lines near Mooroopna stand out against the spectacular sunset on Tuesday night.
