Coles has committed to sourcing all of its private label canned peaches, pears and apricots from SPC Ardmona from next year in a significant boost for the processor and Goulburn Valley growers.
A new contract to start from the November harvest will take the total volume of fruit Coles sources from the Goulburn Valley to more than four million kilograms annually.
The new agreement secures 100 per cent Australian sourcing of Coles’ private label canned product and replaces about 600
Coles chief operating officer John Durkan said SPC Ardmona and the fruitgrowers of the Goulburn Valley had been supplying Coles with great quality products for more than 70 years.
‘‘We have being working hard to find innovative ways to build the relationship,’’ he said.
‘‘This new offer, including the sourcing of 100 per cent Australian-grown Coles brand canned peaches, pears and apricots from SPC Ardmona, as well as our investment in national marketing campaigns, is a demonstration of Coles’ commitment to local sourcing and the growers of the Goulburn Valley.’’
SPC Ardmona managing director Peter Kelly said Coles remained a strong supporter of the Goulburn Valley company.
‘‘We’ve been partnering with Coles for many years and welcome their commitment to bring Australian-packaged fruit products to their customers over imported produce,’’ he said.
‘‘This is a fantastic result for our passionate fruitgrowers and the Goulburn Valley community.’’
Coles stocks more than 170 lines of SPC Ardmona product, through its private label and SPC Ardmona-branded ranges.
The latest deal comes on top of Woolworths $7
Fruitgrowers Victoria general manager John Wilson said the deals were driven by a shift in consumer sentiment in response to the plight of SPC Ardmona and growers.
‘‘It is good news,’’ he said.
‘‘It is not going to save the growers that are not with the cannery now, but it may well enhance the businesses of those growers who do have contracts.’’
Mr Wilson said it was a sign the decline in fruit volumes had bottomed out and strong consumer sentiment in favour of locally grown and processed fruit would result in a lift in demand.
‘‘It enhances the case for government support for investment on modernising the SPC Ardmona factory for the future,’’ he said.
