Prisoners were placed in lockdown during a fire at Dhurringile Prison last night.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said prisoners were not in danger after fire broke out at the prison about 8pm.

The fire is believed to have started at a factory or workshop on the prison grounds.

About 19 fire trucks battled the blaze and it was brought under control about 10pm.

The CFA is investigating the cause of the fire.
