A 20-tonne excavator was destroyed in a fire at Hogan Excavations on Irrigation Rd, Numurkah, yesterday.

Country Fire Authority units were called to the blaze just before 6pm after the cabin of an excavator caught alight, with the fire spreading to its fuel reserves.

CFA district operations manager Steve Allan said after initial inspection, the cause of the fire appeared to be welding.

He said given the problems experienced with the job firefighters had done well to save the shed the excavator was stored in.

‘‘There was acetylene cylinders next to the excavator, which were venting flames, so we had to cool them down before we could get into the shed,’’ he said.

‘‘Everyone did a hell of a job to contain the fire to the excavator.’’

Fourteen units attended the fire, with the high number because of the need for extra water, as there was no street water on the property.

The blaze was brought under control in about 45 minutes.

Firefighters tackle the blaze at Hogan Excavations in Numurkah yesterday evening.
