120 ha Grass Fire in Tamleugh on the Shepparton Violet Town Rd which saw 2 Air Support and 12 Tankers attend the scene

Farmers were forced to move quickly yesterday after 120ha of crops and grass went up in flames at Tamleugh North yesterday.

Two helicopters and 12 fire trucks were called to the blaze on Shepparton-Violet Town Rd near Lehmann Swamp Wildlife Reserve about 3pm. It was under control by 3.40pm.

Farmer Margaret Andrew said the fire burned about half of her wheat crop.

‘‘It’s not what you need, we’ve only just done a lot of the fencing after the tornado,’’ Mrs Andrew said.

‘‘But I’m just glad the fire didn’t jump the road to our house and that the stock is all right.’’

Shepparton Country Fire Authority duty officer Rob Van Dorsser said the blaze was another reminder of the dangerous fire season.

‘‘On windy days like today, a small spark can get these fires choofing along,’’ Mr Van Dorsser said. ‘‘This one was a fair size and took a while to get under control.’’
