Police have released a description of a man wanted for questioning over an assault at Harold St, Shepparton on Sunday.By Riahn Smith
An unprovoked assault that left a Shepparton man with face lacerations and a suspected broken nose has been described as a cowardly attack.
Shepparton police Criminal Investigation Unit Detective Senior Constable Shane Kervin said the man, 22, was walking home on Harold St about 1.30
He said they engaged the man in brief conversation before one offender allegedly struck the man’s face.
Det Sen Const Kervin said the victim fell to the ground and was punched a second time before his wallet was stolen and the offenders fled along Knight St.
He said an ambulance took the man to Goulburn Valley Base Hospital where he was treated for facial injuries.
‘‘This is a cowardly attack,’’ Det Sen Const Kervin said.
‘‘It appears that these males were lurking in the shadows waiting for a vulnerable victim to come along.
‘‘People have an expectation in Shepparton that they can walk home at night unmolested and they should be able to.’’
But he urged residents to exercise caution and common sense when it came to late-night travel.
‘‘This is a timely warning that there is safety in numbers,’’ Det Sen Const Kervin said. ‘‘If you’ve been drinking and you’re out late and walking home alone, you’re a potential target.
‘‘People should think about taking a taxi or walking in numbers.’’
Police have released an image of a man they wish to speak to about the incident.
The offender is described as being of medium build, about 178
